Mattress Topper Guide: The Right Model for Bed & Camper

Mattress Topper Guide: The Right Model for Bed, Sofa & Camper

1. What is a mattress topper?

A topper is a pad a few centimetres thick that is placed directly on top of the actual mattress or sleeping surface. It refines the lying feel, improves pressure relief and extends the life of the mattress. At the same time, the topper protects the mattress from dirt and moisture.

2. Materials & lying characteristics: visco memory foam in focus

The choice of core material determines how it feels to lie on:

  • Visco memory foam (thermoelastic): Reacts to body heat and individual body weight. The foam yields precisely at pressure points (such as shoulder and pelvis) and relieves the spine ergonomically. When you change sleeping position, it springs gently back. With a high density of approx. 52 kg/m³, it is particularly dimensionally stable.
  • Cold foam: Offers a somewhat firmer, dynamically springy lying feel and good ventilation properties.
  • Gel foam: Combines pressure relief with adaptability that is independent of temperature.

3. What are the benefits of a topper?

  • Targeted pressure relief: Reduces pressure points in the shoulder and pelvis area.
  • Softening edges and transitions: On split sleeping surfaces or sofa beds, a continuous layer creates a more even lying surface.
  • Mattress protection & hygiene: Absorbs sweat and dirt. The cover can usually be removed and washed.

4. The ideal height: why 5 cm is the standard

The overall height determines how effective the pressure relief is:

  • Too thin (under 4 cm): Often offers too little sinking depth to provide noticeable ergonomic relief.
  • Ideal (5 to 7 cm): Offers the perfect balance of noticeable relief, pleasant support and easy handling (e.g. when rolling up).
  • Too thick (over 8 cm): Can make the lying feel too soft and make turning over in your sleep harder.

5. Uses: bed, sofa bed & on the road

A topper can be used in many ways:

  • In your bed at home: Refines the lying feel of a mattress that is too firm.
  • On the sofa bed: Softens noticeable edges and unevenness in the upholstery.
  • As a flexible guest bed pad: Can be unrolled when needed and stored compactly during the day.

6. Topper in a camper & van: what to consider

More and more campers use toppers to increase sleeping comfort on the road. There are, however, important points to note:

Important practical note for camping & vehicle conversions:
A topper always has a straight cut and does not replace a vehicle-specific shaped cut (e.g. at wheel arches or posts). On flat sleeping surfaces, the 5 cm visco foam noticeably softens transitions. Before buying, please always measure the actually usable flat sleeping surface in your vehicle, as dimensions vary by model generation, conversion and trim.

7. Care & Tencel® functional cover: all benefits at a glance

For maximum bed hygiene and a healthy sleeping climate, the cover of a mattress topper is crucial. The shogazi® topper comes with a removable Tencel® functional cover (lyocell). But why is Tencel® superior to ordinary cotton or purely synthetic fibres?

The 5 benefits of the Tencel® natural fibre:

  • 1. 50 % higher moisture absorption: Tencel® absorbs night-time sweat immediately inside the fibre and releases it evenly to the outside. The sleeping surface stays dry and pleasantly temperate.
  • 2. Soft as silk & skin-friendly: The smooth fibre structure feels cooling and silky soft – perfect for sensitive skin and people with neurodermatitis.
  • 3. Naturally antibacterial & odour-neutral: Because moisture is carried away immediately, bacteria and mites have no breeding ground – entirely without chemical additives.
  • 4. Protection from the cold without heat build-up: In combination with the heat-storing visco core, the cover prevents cooling down on mattresses that feel cold, without causing a damp build-up of heat.
  • 5. Hygienically washable at 60 °C: Thanks to the all-round zip, the cover can be removed easily and washed at 60 °C on a gentle cycle – for absolute freshness and reliable allergen removal.

8. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can a topper save a sagging mattress?

No. A topper adapts to the surface beneath it. If the mattress already has a noticeable hollow, the topper follows that contour. It is meant to refine intact sleeping surfaces.

How is the topper stored or transported?

The visco memory foam can easily be rolled up tightly and secured with straps. After unrolling, its elastic recovery properties bring it back to its original shape.
